In 2015, more than 2 Lac young graduates appeared for CDS (Combined Defense Services) exam hoping to get selected in any of the following Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA) and Officers Training Academy (OTA).
UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) is the regulatory authority which conducts CDS exam twice every year. CDS Exam Pattern consists of a written exam followed by an interview and personality test. Written exam for admission to Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Air Force Academy includes English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. While for entry in Officers Training Academy English and General Knowledge is checked.
CDS Application Form is available online since 9 August,2017. The last date to fill and submit CDS application form is 8 September, 2017. This process involves two steps first registration and then uploading of scanned photograph and mentioning personal details.
CDS Application Form fee is INR 200 for General and OBC candidates while female/SC/ST candidates are not required to pay any application fee. CDS eligibility criteria comprises of Age Limit, Basic Educational Requirement and Nationality

1- Age Limit
The minimum and maximum age required for applying is given below:
Indian Military Academy 19-24 years
Air Force Academy
19-24 years
Naval Academy 19-22 years
Officers’ Training Academy 19-27 years
2- Educational Qualification Required
For joining Indian Military Academy: Graduation in any field from a recognized University is required
For joining Officers Training Academy: Graduation in any field from a recognized University is required
For Joining Indian Naval Academy: Engineering or B.Tech is mandatory
For joining Air Force Academy: Candidates should have passed 12th standard with Physics and Mathematics and should be graduate from a recognized university or bachelor’s degree in engineering / technology.
3- Nationality
Indian Nationals, Subject of Nepal, Bhutan or a Tibetan Refugee who came to India with an intention of permanently staying can apply. Similarly, an aspirant of Indian origin who had migrated from Pakistan, Srilanka, Burma or East African countries of Kenya, The United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Zaire, Ethiopia, Vietnam with an intention of permanently staying in India may also apply.

CDS English Exam Pattern: In the written exam for Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA) and Officers Training Academy (OTA), there are total 120 questions asked of 100 marks also negative marking is applicable. One-third mark is deducted for every wrong answer.
Tips to Score: As the English paper will be in two diversifications (Vocabulary and Grammar). Candidates should focus on both of these aspects with equal focus. That is to have a rich vocabulary reading is a must and to build a strong foundation in Grammar candidates have to write and create new sentences with new words learnt. This way both aspects will be covered simultaneously.
